SALT LAKE CITY – Westminster College presents a panel discussion entitled “Lessons on Social Entrepreneurship from Three Cups of Tea” on Feb. 3, 2010, at 7:30 p.m. in the Gore School of Business Auditorium.
The panel will discuss Three Cups of Tea author Greg Mortenson's journey from making a promise to a village in Pakistan, to the creation of the Central Asia Institute's mission of building schools throughout the region. The panelists will provide their perspectives on their own journeys starting non-profits and how they gained support for their vision in the community. They will share their challenges and the importance of making sure they created an organization that can carry on their mission after they have moved on to other priorities. Attendees can expect a lively discussion and become inspired by what one person's vision can do to change the world.
Stephen Hurlbut, Westminster assistant professor of management, will lead the discussion on how one person’s passion for a cause can become the foundation of a successful nonprofit.
Panelists will also include Don Gomes MBA ’94, former executive director of The Utah Nonprofits Association, and Chris Chytraus ’77, founder of The Sharing Place, a grief support program for children.
This discussion is part of the college’s annual “Common Ground” theme, which focuses this year on the “Mountains.” Common Ground is the college’s annual place-based theme that includes a common read and a multitude of activities, lectures, and events in and out of the classroom.

About Three Cups of Tea:
Written by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin, Three Cups of Tea discusses one man’s mission to promote peace…one school at a time. In 1993, mountaineer Mortenson drifted into an impoverished Pakistan village in the Karakoram Mountains after a failed attempt to climb K2. After he was taken in and nursed back to health by the people of an impoverished Pakistani village, Mortenson promised to return one day and build them a school. From that rash, earnest promise grew one of the most incredible humanitarian campaigns of our time—Greg Mortenson's one-man mission to counteract extremism by building schools, especially for girls, throughout the breeding ground of the Taliban.
